Attractive and Abundant- AMETHYST

Attractive and Abundant- AMETHYST

February's very own birthstone, amethyst is the number one crystal I turn to when needing a spiritual uplift. Key words for this amazing crystal are cleansing, protection, and inspiration. It enhances intuition, aids in deeper meditation, helps you become more aware (inwardly and outwardly), calms the mind and spirit, and also protects one from nightmares and insomnia.

Origins & History

Amethyst originates from Brazil, Germany, Sri Lanka, and Uruguay. The Greeks are the first civilization credited for finding this gemstone. The name amethyst comes from the word "Amethystus" meaning not drunken, in Ancient Greece. This crystal was thought to protect against drunkenness. Therefore, Greeks would wear amethyst or drink from cups made from it. Though the Greeks were the first credited to discover this stone, it does date back to biblical times. According to the Bible, amethyst was one of the twelve gemstones worn by High Priest Aaron. This stone is also associated with guardian angel, Adnachiel. Also important in Buddhist religion, amethyst has significant meaning to Buddha. The Buddhist prayer beads, malas, usually contain this gemstone.

Ancient Egyptians used amethyst as a gemstone as it would be common for pharaohs to have their tombstones adorned by wealthy and abundant stone. Amethyst and gold were given as gifts to many of the families in Egypt when the country became more and more wealthy. The famous Cleopatra was said to have an amethyst ring which was believed to capture the hearts of Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony. This created a ripple effect in Roma where Roman women would where amethyst to keep their husbands faithful.

There are so many different cultures that have embraced this wonderful gemstone!
